Well , we met, not many, but, we experimented with a couple of 'difficult' songs, 'Down the Sally gardens', 'Caledonia', 'San Francisco bay blues' with some success, particularly Kevin on the whistle in 'Sally Gardens' We are becoming quite proficient at 'Galway Girl' with that strange whining chord C5 See you all next week hopefully
9 January 2018
Well, Kevin asked me to find an Irish song about the Innish Isles and indeed I did find one, but it sounded nothing like the one Kevin played, so I will leae it for a whle
Meanwhile I found a nice Irish song - 'Down The Sally Gardens'
Here it is sung divinely by Andreas Scholl
And here are the lyrics and chords to try it tomorrow
Happy New Year to all!
Well, off to a SWINGING start for the New Year last night!
All FOUR of us turned out- Jasmine, Kevin, Steve and me
Angela has deserted us for 4 weeks whilst she learns to drive her new camera at Wednesday night lessons
Still, we had a great session that included lots of finger picking accompaniment to great songs such as 'Annie's Song', 'Miss Otis Regrets', 'Love hurts', 'The Galway Shawl'; the finger picking was counterpointed by Kevin's superb lead on the whistle
Kevin has not yet decided to ban strumming, But I am working on it!😀
Hope to see more o y'all during the year
......and a prosperous one too (or one, two, three..)
Saw the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain last week
They are astonishingly, intimidatingly good!
Their timing is absolutely spot on, their vocals superb, and their ukulele playing reaches levels well beyond the reach of we happy-slappy string-bashers
I noted that they rarely actually strummed (except on the very fast number) but finger-picked
I will have a word with our leader to see if he will introduce strumming ban😀
Kevin's whistle-lessons seem to be going well, and Jasmine in particular is making comparatively
Jasmine has now got a job but will build the job around Wednesday nights, so she can continue with us - so well done Jasmine
We have not seen Rosie or Sandra for some time - Rosie is too busy selling 2 kg sacks of sparkly stuff on TV (£30.99 off this week only), but the last time Sandra came she entertained us with a spot of line dncing to 'Wagon Wheel' - good stuff!
Kevin has now written a song about Jasmin's cat, lyrics by jasmine - it is good too
As you may wel know the pub is up for sale so we are looking for a new venue
Anyone knowing of such a venue plaese inform Kevin
The venue spec is simple - it must allow up to 12 Uke payers, have a bar and en-suite facilities, and be free!
Should be no problem at all!
Oh, and yes,, I almost forgot we meet again Wednesday 3rd Janury 2018
look forward to seeing you and hearing y'all, a Sandra might say
Well, 'tis the Season of Saccharin and Sentiment when we gather all together to sing sickly songs and the exterior of houses twinkle like beckoning Turkish brothels (so I am told)
So a Happy Xmas to all! (Note how Christ is struck out by the X - how apt!)
If you are not a Christian (and there is a 70% probability that you are not) then Season's Greetings to you - that awful phrase moves us even further away from what Christmas is about - if I receive a Season's Greeting card I am insulted and chuck it in the bin
Why am I rabbiting on like this you may well think?
Well, our leader, Kevin has pronounced that the Burton Ukulele Group will meet on all Wednesday's leading up to Christmas, but will NOT meet on Wednesday 27 December, and normal service will resume on Wednesday 3 Jan 2018
Happy CHRISTmas to everyone and a prosperous New Year!
